AMI ( Automatic Music Instruments ) was founded in 1909 in Grand Rapids Michigan. The Company was formed by combining two Rowe enterprises, one which manufactured the self playing pianos, the other one which leased and serviced them. In 1927 AMI introduced the all-electric coin-operated phonograph, the "juke box," to replace coin-operated pianos, but few built before 1934 under the trade name National Automatic Selective Phonograph. From around 1936 the machines were sold to Operators. The company had a tremendeous success after WWII especially during the 50´s where they produced numerous Silver Age Models and the famous AMI Continental.
